We pride ourselves on delivering a service of the highest order to the young people under our care whereby their needs and interests are at the forefront of our work and support.

As a care provider our core principles include, but are not limited to the following –

  • Privacy.
  • Respect.
  • Integrity.
  • Fulfilment.
  • Goal setting and achievement.
  • Ensuring our young people’s rights are fully protected and esteem levels are kept at a high level at all times.
  • Health & safety.
  • Safeguarding.
  • Education for the young people under our care – Enrolment onto the Functional Skills Training programme
  • Staff & management ongoing work place training.

Here at Guardian Care Services our core values are at the forefront of our ethos. Our core values include, but are not limited to the following –

Customer Focus We are extremely passionate and fiercely focused on meeting our young people’s wants and needs. We feel the quicker our young people feel a sense of whole hearted support being offered on a daily basis through our management structures and systems the quicker they will embrace the said support and utilise the same in progressing and obtaining positive results.

Communication We insist that all levels of communication between management, staff and the young people under our care are open, honest and clear, leaving no remit for miscommunication or misunderstanding.

Team Work Our motto here is in unity we stand stronger. We feel the correct degree of team work shown and demonstrated between Guardian Care Services and the local authorities we deal with, other service providers, localised employers and indeed our young people are vital to the outcomes and results achieved in the medium to long term.

Delivering Results We are extremely focused on delivering and achieving the best results/outcomes for the young people under our care and becoming the number one choice of service provider for the local authorities we deal with.

Integrity We can be relied upon to act with honesty and integrity at all times. Our young people’s wants and needs are at the forefront of our actions at all times.

Leadership We encourage and inspire all management, staff members and young people under our care to be the very best they can be to help achieve their goals in life.

Education Functional Skills Training Workshops: We feel that every young person under our care and guidance should be given the ability to educate and progress themselves accordingly. To this end Guardian Care Services has formed a partnership with a London based education body called Boost Education Services, who have tuition schools in operation in Ilford, Stratford and Walthamstow, with many more London and Home Counties education centres in the pipeline.

Each young person placed under the care of Guardian Care Services will be enrolled onto the Functional Skills Training Programme, which will focus on Maths, English and ICT (Information & Communication Technology) skills. This course is intended to support learners as they seek to improve their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.

The Functional Skills Training Programme will be split into a 6 month course and a 1 year course tailored by Boost Education. Each of our young people will be initially assessed by Boost Education so that they are placed onto the correct most beneficial Functional Skills Level for them.

Boost Education will customise the programme for each of our young people and will provide all education resources, teaching contact time and additional homework resources.

Each young person enrolled onto the Functional Skills Training Programme will have an allocated folder for their education portfolio. These folders will be kept by the care facility managers under lock and key and will house all education material; all tutor reports together with the young people’s self-evaluation reports etc. These folders will be made readily available for inspection purposes by the respective local authorities we work with on request. Assessments will take place at the end of each month to keep track of the young people’s progress and all feedback together with results will be recorded in the learning folders accordingly.

Boost Education will be allocating a qualified tutor for each of Guardian Care Services care homes, who will visit the care facility and deliver the training programme in maths, English and ICT for the Functional Skills programme accordingly. There will be 1 enhanced DBS checked tutor allocated by Boost Education per 6 young people and there will be a guardian present at all times during teaching contact periods.

Boost Education will provide 2 hours of tuition per day on a Tuesday – Friday cycle between the hours of 10am – 12pm and also set regular homework for the young people to carry out in their own time.

When Boost Education is satisfied that one or more of our young people are ready to sit the Functional Skills examination then he/she/they will be booked onto one of the localised external examination centres examination days and accompanied to the respective centre by one of their carers accordingly. Successful candidates will receive a formal qualification, which is recognised by a majority of employers.

Our ethos for providing this education supplement to compliment our care provision is simple. We are of the opinion that by achieving these qualifications our young people’s confidence and motivation levels will naturally increase. We also feel that the skills and techniques learnt by our young people will prove invaluable to them in future work placements or further education.

Monthly mandatory reporting systems Here at Guardian Care Services, we feel that one of the most important fundamentals to uphold with our working partners and all local authorities we deal with is a clear and concise mandatory monthly reporting system on the progress being made with all the young people under our care & education. Each of our centre managers will be under duty to send through on the last working day of each month a basic report to their primary point of contact, which will include the following –

  • Any positive and/or negatives picked up or developed over the course of the month by the young person under our care.
  • A head count on how many of the available Functional Skills Training workshops on offer throughout the month the young person attended.
  • A monthly tutors report on the progress of each young person enrolled onto the Functional Skills Training programme.
  • A monthly young person’s self-evaluation report.

Staff & Management on Going Training All staff members and management will undergo a quarterly training programme which has been designed to enhance existing skills and develop new skill sets which will prove invaluable in moulding and progressing the interests of the young people under our care.

Transition Service At Guardian Care Services we offer transition units for boys and girls aged between 16 – 18 years of age. We cater for an array of needs and abilities and as such ensure that we tailor individual plans that are designed to encapsulate each of our young people’s individual life skills, needs and requirements.

Each of our transition units will be staffed by a highly motivated, experienced and professional handpicked team who will be managed by a manager with no less than 10 years experience within the industry. Our transition units are manned 24 hours per day by members of staff. The overall aim of the team reflects Guardian Care Service’s ethos and philosophy of quality care focused on the individual. The designated team within each of our transition units supports each young person with all of their needs, which includes, but is not limited to the following –

  • Booking and assisting each young person under our care and guidance with appointments on health, education, professional and personal matters.
  • Assisting each young person under our care and guidance with registering with local doctors, dentists, opticians etc.
  • Assisting each young person under our care and guidance with PEP meetings, interviews, LAC reviews, medicals, placement planning and moving on into independence.

Each Transition unit staff member will work closely with the placing authorities, health authorities, education practitioners, advocacy services and the young people’s families to ensure the team around the child is maintained and is working to provide the very best outcomes and future for the young people under our care. This work is supported by a monthly report outlining achievements, behaviour and ongoing outcomes.

All of these outcomes and skills are achieved through high quality key work sessions with not only the young person’s identified key worker, but by the whole transition unit team. The key work sessions are personalised to meet each young person’s needs and capacity to engage.

Here at Guardian Care Services we feel that working alongside the young people under our care and interacting with them in their daily routine is a key factor leading to a potential successful outcome.

By conducting regular house meetings this allows and encourages each young person to voice their opinion in their home surroundings in a safe and managed environment. This permits the whole house to explore solutions and alternatives to situations that may have an impact on the way they interact and build relationships. We invest in building high quality environments that promote a feeling of belonging and stability for each young person under our care and guidance.

As an organisation we are fully committed to the pursuit of excellence in our work with young people in our care and we invite you to contact us to discuss your needs and gain a fuller understanding and insight into the services we provide.

This is a new dimension to care we at Guardian Care Services have researched, explored and now wish to implement to compliment the robust 24 hour Transitional Services to boys between the age of 16 – 18 we already cater for.

Within our Holmwood Road, Ilford care home facility we have set up a self contained studio apartment, which is located within the boundary of the property, but is independent and separate from the main house. We have called this facility the Step Up To Independence unit.

We intend to use this unit to weigh and assess how ready some of our 17 plus young people are for the Outreach programme they will be placed into when they breach the age of 18.

Some of our young people may not cope with moving from a controlled environment, which provides 24 hour care into the Outreach programme, which gives them more independence and a limited amount of care terribly well. Therefore, we propose to monitor, weigh and assess some of our more ready young people for the Outreach programme by placing them into the Step Up To Independence facility for a 2 week – 4 week period and issuing a report to the respective local authority on how the young person coped etc. The report will include any positives and negatives shown and expressed by the subject young person and identify areas, if any at all; the young person and the carers will need to focus on as improvement points.

We do not intend to charge any more for the set up and utilisation of this facility then what we charge under the 24 hour Transitional Services we already provide. We have decided to incorporate this facility into our general service provision as we feel this small step will go some way to improving outcome figures / stats and will further act in the best interests of the young people under our care and guidance.

Below you will find some of the affiliations Boost Education Services have with recognised regulatory & quality assurance bodies –

Functional Skills
What are Functional Skills?

They are practical skills in English, mathematics and ICT that enable learners to deal with practical problems and challenges. They allow individuals to work confidently, effectively and independently in everyday life.

For example, they help us recognise good-value deals when making purchases, write an effective application letter, or use the Internet.

Functional skills are a key to success. They open doors to learning, to life and to work. These skills are valued by employers and further education and are a platform on which to build other employability skills. Better functional skills can mean a better future – as learners or as employees.

Functional skills are an essential part of the secondary curriculum and are embedded in the revised Programmes of Study for English, mathematics and ICT at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, and in the revised GCSE subject criteria for these subjects. They are a mandatory component of the Diploma, Foundation Learning and Apprenticeships. They are available as stand-alone qualifications for young people and adults.

Functional Skills Mathematics assessments will consist of mathematical problem solving and decision making using numbers, with tasks simulating the natural occurrence of numerical reasoning within real life contexts.

Functional Skills English assessments will consist of speaking and listening, reading and writing tasks simulating the need for English language skills within real life contexts; including usage of spelling and grammar and presentation skills.

Functional Skills ICT assessments will consist of tasks demanding independent use of all forms of ICT; problem solving, research and interpretation.

Although enrolment for each of our young people onto the Functional Skills Training programme is mandatory, their attendance to the 2 hours per day workshops on a cycle of Tuesday – Friday is not. Therefore, here at Guardian Care Services we have decided to re channel some of our profits back into the young people under our care and guidance by way of cash / monetary incentives. The cash / monetary incentives will be paid through to all young people under our care who maintain a minimum attendance level of 80% plus on the 4 Functional Skill Workshops on offer throughout each week of the month together with successfully completing the homework assignments the respective tutors will set them accordingly.

Individual Cash / Monetary Incentives There will be one cash /monetary incentive paid for an 80% plus attendance of all Functional Skill workshops on offer throughout the month and a second cash /monetary incentive paid for the successful completion of homework assignments set by the tutor over the month. All cash / monetary incentive payments will be paid out by each of our care home managers at 5pm on the last working day of each month.

Group Activity Incentives In addition to individual cash / monetary incentives we have also decided to reward our young people with quarterly excursions / activities such as a paintballing days out or Go Ape experience etc all funded and fully paid for by management providing as a group a 80% plus attendance is maintained over the course of each 3 month period of the Functional Skills workshops on offer.

Here at Guardian Care Services, we feel that one of the most important fundamentals to uphold with our working partners and all local authorities we deal with is a clear and concise mandatory monthly reporting system on the progress being made with all the young people under our care & education. What do they think?

FANTASTIC!

The most important thing I have learned since starting with Young Cumbria is actually about me and the way I was leading my life and the choices I made which weren’t always the right choices.

Rachel
Awesome!

Being here with Guardian Care makes me learn about people and how they would act, makes me feel more about myself in the public! And my social life!

John
Perfect!

I have only just started recently and I have met many wonderful people from different background.  It’s given me a chance to meet new people.
